  1. Hey, Steve! I was just listening to the podcast and you were discussing your frustration with Windows and the forced updates, among other issues. I find it funny that it was able to get through your firewall.

Since you are considering a Mac, I just wanted to give you my thoughts. I have been using Macs for nearly twenty years; basically, since the days of OS 9 and the OS X betas. The early days of Mac OS X (now MacOS) were tough. But the OS is very solid now. The changes are generally minor as far as the GUI and tools, whereas Windows has gone through some major GUI changes. The OS is rock-solid for me. It never crashes. It stays fresh even when the system has been up a long time. Occasionally, a browser or some app will hog RAM and you can kill it and be back to normal, but that happens with any OS. There is a dedicated developer community that provides a lot of great software and hacks for things that Apple fails to build in, or hacks for things that users find annoying that Apple included. The software on the Mac is quite good and easy to use. In fact, you’ll find that most of your keyboard shortcuts are often translated easily to the Mac, just swap CTRL for Command, but the MacOS even allows you to customize keyboard shortcuts, so you could use CTRL in place of Command. The one niggle is that hardware can be expensive. But, as you said, you get the OS updates for free. So, total cost of ownership is lower. Plus, viruses and bloatware are not the issue on the Mac that they are on PCs. Not saying you can ignore AV protection, but you don’t have to stress as much about it.

Just reach out if you have any questions. I’ll be happy to help.
